The story behind this bracelet dates back to 1008 when the Black Plague hit the Valenciennois region. In a moment of desperation, the villagers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. A hermit monk named Bertholin was visited by the Holy Mother, who instructed him to gather the faithful in the basilica of Notre-Dame de Valenciennes to pray. Seven days later, Mary appeared with angels carrying a scarlet cord. The angels surrounded the city and its outskirts with the cord, halting the spread of the disease. Each year, a pilgrimage known as “The Tour of the Holy Cord” is held to commemorate this miraculous event.
